Community Rail Education Network is hosting a competition called Backtrack, which is aiming to decrease the amount of rail trespass amongst young people.

The network is inviting young people between the ages of 11-18 to create a simple, but powerful message (created at home or at school) to make young people aware of the dangers and to encourage them to stop trespassing. This can take the form of a short film, storyboard, script, or song.

Entries must be made from home, in your garden or at your school or group. Your entry may be used in schools to promote railway safety so it must be suitable for this age group. Entrants are encouraged to share your entry on social media to spread the word to as many young people as possible.

The winning entry will receive a GoPro HERO8 Black Bundle. Spot prizes will be announced throughout the competition plus a bonus prize for the entry with the greatest social media impact.

Karen Bennett, Education Officer, Community Rail Lancashire and Chair of the Education Network, said: “At our first Zoom meeting we were rather shocked by the increase in trespassing and the ‘room’ immediately said ‘We can do something about that’. In a matter of weeks, a national competition has been devised, prizes sponsored and backing received from across the rail industry.

We want young people to show off their creativity to get the message across to their peers that being on the tracks is potentially deadly. And in order to spread the message to as many young people as possible, we are suggesting that young people (over 13 years old) share their video or song on social media and we have a category for the entry with the greatest social media impact!”
